“The Sun's Shadow” by Von Schonwerth, from The Turnip Princess
Death ruled the world, but when the Sun and Moon grew up, they banished death, who killed everything they’d created in retribution. Nearly everything perished in a flood, and then the Titans held a meeting in a mountain. A weasel came from underground and licked their eyes, and the Titans ended up taking Death’s side, but he wouldn’t accept their verdict. Enraged, they stripped him, but the Sun took pity and gave him a cloak so he could hide. From that day on, whenever the Sun shines, it casts a shadow, which is Death in his Cloak.
We discuss this fine folk mythology on complementarity and ultimate balance.

What freed Iron John? LL wonders if doing good, helping the prince fulfill his fate frees him from his curse. I look at the effects of the enchantment, which in general stagnate the land. With the relationship with the boy, he provides, he is able to be useful. This former “wild man” bequeaths his fortune to the boy at the end of the story. We reflect on real wealth in this story.

“Prince Dung Beetle” by Franz Xaver Von Schonwerth, from The Turnip Princess
A poor girl, Barbara, went out to find medicine for her sick mother. Leaping over a paving stone, she slipped and nearly crushed a dung beetle. Startled, she is nonplussed, then sobs. The beetle slides under her and takes her to the druggist and then back home. He is gone before she can thank him.
She and her mother see a prince with retinue on the horizon. He waltzes into the room and tells her her love has freed him from his spell of many years, to be abused as a beetle, like he had done to insects as a boy. He offers her everything he owns and she accepts his hand in marriage. At the wedding, all the birds and beasts play their music, and everything with feet dances.
We summarize and then discuss this lively comeback story.

A hunter, and then another, disappear in the forest, as do those sent to find them, so the forest is left untouched for years. A mysterious fearless hunter arrives from abroad, and when he ventures in, his dog, chasing game, is stopped by a body of water, and a hand reaches out from it and snatches the dog. The water is drained, and a rust-colored man with hair down to his knees lay at the bottom…

The prince passes out and wakes up after a long time, and tries to search for turnips again. This part of the story may resemble being asleep in life to a true dream you’ve had. Then we expound on the story’s sleep theme, and relate the bear’s instruction to the boy to the indirect relation between words told and finding wisdom.

My friend IR and I discuss the titular story from The Turnip Princess and Other Newly Discovered Fairy Tales. Summary: A prince lost in the forest takes shelter in a cave and falls asleep. When he wakes up an old woman and a bear are leaning over him, but they are kind and helpful. Later, the bear, alone with the prince, instructs him to remove a nail from the wall and bury it under a turnip. He runs out only to encounter a monster, and passes out. Through twists and turns, and timeless sleeps, he makes his way back to the cave, furiously demanding something that was there all along, and by putting something wrong right, finds myriad problems merge into a beautiful whole.
We go through the short story line-by-line, examining the meanings of movements, words, objects and characters. We notice the nature of various things as well as their changing manifestations. We comment on patterns in the story, and we bring in some philosophy, including Jung.
We talk about the story as involving being lost and finding your way, of facing and healing from trauma, of various stages of coming to realizations, and ultimately of growth, transformation, maturity, happiness. Please join us and comment on your thoughts about our discussion and the story, and I hope this inspires you to read this and other stories on your own and especially with friends.

LL asks what is with the gnome dropping the bread donation at the door? Is it a test? Maybe only the youngest hunter shows himself to be strong enough to detect what the mannikin is doing while hiding behind the propriety of Xenia. I draw a parallel with Odysseus, who also deals with bad guests. Anyway, this scene cracks open the story, opening important possibilities for the young hunter and leading to the story’s resolution.

A king who was a lover of the variety of his trees forbids anyone from eating of any of them, lest they be buried 100 fathoms deep. His three beautiful daughters gaze at the trees at harvest time, and especially one, heavily laden with blood-red fruit. She takes one and advertising its deliciousness, gets the others to eat of it too, and they disappear below. The king comes and calls after them, and when he is befuddled by the lack of a reply, he sends word throughout the kingdom.
Three hunters, on the eighth day of their search, come upon a large castle full of beautiful apartments. In one is laid a smoking hot meal, but the castle is unoccupied by any soul. After half a day and starving, they decide to eat, and further, to live in the castle. One will stay while the others go out to search for the daughters. The eldest stays first, and a manikin comes to beg for bread, but drops it when he receives it and orders the hunter to pick it up. When he does the little man grabs him by the hair and beats him. The next day the same thing happened to the second brother, but they conspired not to tell the third, whom they called Stupid Hans because he was not exactly of the forest.
When it’s the third brother’s turn, he refuses, saying the man doesn’t deserve it, and the mannikin starts to repeat his performance but the brother seizes the initiative and beats him until he was told him he knew where the King’s daughters were. The mannikin told him he was a gnome, and there were a thousand like him. He took the hunter to a waterless well and told him the daughters were there, combing the heads of many-headed dragons. He also informed him to be wary of his comrades.
The third brother goes with his brothers to the well and draw lots, and the first goes down but rings the bell after a short time; the same happens with the second. The third boldly goes all the way down, where he sees each of the daughters in chambers combing dragon’s heads. He decapitates the serpents and has the daughters hoisted up, but puts a stone in place of himself when it is his turn. He sees the gnome’s prophecy come true when the stone is dropped. The two brothers take the daughters to the King, having them swear to not tell the truth.
The brother in the well, in the meantime, paces and paces. He sees a flute but does not know what to do with it. By and by, he plays it, and gnomes appear and fill the chamber. They seize him by each hair and float him up. When he arrives at the chamber where the king and the three daughters are waiting for the wedding to start, the ladies faint and the king orders the man seized. When they come to they say they cannot tell the truth, but the king tells them to tell it to the stove, and he listens outside the room. He sentences the two brothers to the gallows, gives the third in marriage to the intrepid hunter, and on that occasion I wore glass shoes that went “Klink” as I struck them against a stone.

I speculate about aliens as a cultural, psychological or possibly real phenomena, expressing my openness to whatever it is. Belief is less interesting to me than the desire to do so. I ask LL what about aliens interests her. We share a fascination with mystery, although the fascination takes different forms for us.

Becoming Human
I view having deep, open conversations as perhaps the primary way I explore my and others' humanity. I am looking for self-transcendence, knowledge, depth and love though exploration of experience, stories (such as myths and folktales), and ideas. I hope you enjoy these conversations for personal growth and happiness, and thank you for listening.
