Disorders from Affections more than from Needs (Clip)
“You know how to suffer and die. You know how to endure the law of necessity in physical ills, but you have not yet imposed laws on the appetites of your heart, and the disorder of our lives arises from our affections far more than from our needs.” Rousseau, Emile, (trans. Bloom) 443-4. We hear a lot about getting our needs met, and how not getting them met leads to misbehavior, but this quote emphasizes affections instead. Why can’t good things feel good and bad things feel bad?! Much of Rousseau’s answer seems to be in our development and education. How do you think we should deal with our affections?
