After death, the boy’s spirit-cum-bird leaves the home, where there has been so much food (which brought forth life, death, manipulation, and perversity), and goes into the realm of work. There, things that provide for people are gained, through exchange with beauty and truth, and the little bird returns and gives the stepmother what she has coming to her.

The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. The previously-barren woman gets her wish, but she pays with her life – and she’s happy as she goes down to the depths. Later, the stepmother keeps the apples away from the children and uses one to trick her daughter into thinking she’s killed her brother. While food is religious to the original mother – paying in sacrifice and gratitude for life she is given – it’s a tool to the stepmother.

(From a discussion on the Brothers Grimm’s “The Juniper Tree.”) There is a lot of eating and food in this dark story, including cannibalism. The wish for a child at the beginning, the devouring of the tormented boy, the interrupted meal, the implement of revenge on the stepmother. It is related to the mother’s fertility and protection.

Abrupt Death and Rejoicing (Clip)
Everything happens step-by-step in this story until BOOM–the stepmother is crushed under the millstone. She goes down to her fate, to her master. Then the opera resumes, the again-whole family rejoices and goes to finish their dinner.

The importance of blood in these stories. It is associated with maturity and death, and new life, the cycles of nature. Also, blood dropping to the ground may be a kind of psychological seeding or offering, since it’s a sacrifice. From a discussion on the Brothers Grimm’s “The Juniper Tree”

The Strong Spirit Glimmers Quickly: In the story, the beauty of the boy’s resurrection comes soon after his being consumed by his father. This may have to do with the compressed time period of this story and it seems like a non-modern, non-realistic version of the story. It’s like hope springs like a shoot as soon as the seeds are planted, indicating fecundity. It might be said that here, with his second birth, the boy’s true promise is shown.

Due to the stepmother’s selfishness, something was taken from the family, and he is reincarnated and goes about the community collecting things. Revenge and atonement both are linked to being made whole again. Interesting that the implement of her murder is the communal millstone.

Why do both the goldsmith and the shoemaker miss an article of clothing when they go out to meet the little bird? There may be a relation to the community of the story, how everyone misses something and completes others, exchanges with others, except, of course, the stepmother, who has stepped out of the community with her atrocity.

Becoming Human
I view having deep, open conversations as perhaps the primary way I explore my and others' humanity. I am looking for self-transcendence, knowledge, depth and love though exploration of experience, stories (such as myths and folktales), and ideas. I hope you enjoy these conversations for personal growth and happiness, and thank you for listening.
