The Brothers Grimm’s “Maid Maleen:” True Love Over Political Marriage, but After Much Suffering and Intelligence (Clip)

It’s notable that the princess’s kingdom has been destroyed in this story and that her father is never heard from again.  And here, two political marriages are thwarted and the beautiful young people get to marry for love, but only after years of suffering, work, and risk.  The princess also escapes the tower without the prince’s help.  The prince also goes undeceived several times.

Brothers Grimm’s “Maid Maleen” Summary Pt. 3: Third Location, Necklace Gift, Identity Test and Reveal of Ugly Princess (Clip)

After Maid Maleen passes the third location, a church door, and sings her ditty, the prince gives her a necklace. When she returns to the ugly princess, she returns everything but that.  The ugly princess conceals herself on the wedding night and the prince administers an identity test.  He asks her about the locations and the princess dismisses the questions before going back to Maid for the answer, threatening her life the third time.  But the prince is still suspicious so he asks about the necklace and reveals her true identity.  She orders her guards to kill MM but the prince saves her.

Brothers Grimm’s “Maid Maleen” Summary Pt. 2: Kitchen Work and Stand-in, and Identity Denial (Clip)

Maid Maleen and her servant travel from country to country, surviving on uncooked nettles, and finally find a castle kitchen that takes them in as maids.  MM accommodates the princess, an ugly and wicked girl who is betrothed to MM’s erstwhile love.  Wanting to avoid the opprobrium of the crowds, the princess gets MM to take her place in the ceremony.  The crowds adore the beautiful, bejeweled Maleen, as does the prince, who thinks he recognizes her, but she denies her identity.

Brothers Grimm’s “Maid Maleen” Summary Pt. 1: Love Denied and Locked in a Tower (Clip)

A prince and Maid Maleen love each other, but she is betrothed to someone else by her father.  He locks her up in a tower for seven years; time is kept by the diminution of their food stores.  She cannot hear her love when he comes by.  Eventually, they are able to make a hole in the wall, but they emerge to a desolate kingdom.  No one of their compatriots is to be found, and she and her servant leave their homeland.

The Brothers Grimm’s “Maid Maleen”

Maid Maleen, denied her true love, is shut up in a tower.  After seven  years, she and her maid emerge to a destroyed castle and town.  They wander the countryside, denied refuge and surviving on nettles.  Finally, they are given kitchen work.  This happens to be in her beloved prince’s kingdom, and he is to be betrothed to a princess whose heart was as ugly as her face.  This one, ashamed, has Maid Maleen pose as her during the wedding.  MM says a ditty at each threshold, catching the ear of the confused prince.  These later serve to authenticate her identity and expose the other one, who tries to have MM killed, but who is executed instead.  We think this story pits the political versus the truth and has the truth win out.  How often among the high and mighty does it prevail?

It seems that a key separation from nature, from other animals, is humans’ unlimited appetites and desires.  The figure of the tyrant is a prototypical example of the human with these fed and yet unsatiated desires.  A three year-old with power and sexuality.
