(From the Brothers Grimm’s “Eve’s Various Children,” Summary Pt. 2) When Eve sees the blessings The Lord is giving out, she instructs her ugly ‘uns to come out.  They’re dirty and unkempt.  The Lord blesses them too, but with more hands-on jobs.  Upset, Eve asks why these kids can’t get jobs like the other kids did, and she accepts that and apologizes.

(From the Brothers Grimm’s “Eve’s Various Children,” Summary Pt. 1) After the original sin, A & E are cast out into the world.  Every year, they have one child, some ugly and some beautiful.  God is coming to visit and she lines up the beautiful ones; the ugly ones she hides in various places.  The Lord comes and immediately starts blessing the house and children, giving them various high-status professions.

Eve's Various Children, Abstract Language and Job Titles

We summarize and discuss the Grimm Bros.’ tale “Eve’s Various Children,” which takes us past the Fall and being kicked out of the Garden of Eden in Adam and Eve’s growing family.  The Lord is to come to visit, but Eve only presents her beautiful children.  God blesses them as “king,” “count,” “learned man” and so forth, so she shows her ugly children as well.  He blesses them “fisherman,” “blacksmith,” etc. and she is at first taken aback, but the Lord corrects her perception, saying those too are useful for the world to come.  We discuss this story and have different perspective at first.  I viewed it through a kind of inherited classist perspective but she sees it as a kind of origin story that imparts dignity to working jobs.  We discuss abstract and politically-correct language of our time.

Hope Your Leader is an Ugly Donkey, and Not an Enchanting Snake (Clip)

From the Brothers’ Grimm’s story, “The Donkey.” Another aspect is the Court – the Donkey spends some time there after his audacious and confident entrance, and must have learned much about the games that are played there.  After a while, he wishes to leave.  This may show that he is not a power-hungry, that he is not attracted to the intrigue and does not wish to slither through the court’s mazes.

The Donkey Suit as Developmental Armor (Clip)

From the Brothers’ Grimm’s story, “The Donkey.” The donkey skin could be viewed as a kind of gestation skin, a protection from sycophants for a growing prince.  His getting rid of it is a kind of coming out, after which he is mature and ready to take on his responsibilities.  This is when he gets married and is given the reins of the kingdoms.

From the Brothers’ Grimm’s story, “The Donkey.” LL thinks of the donkey suit as protection – from sycophants and anyone who didn’t like the prince for who he really was (including his mother).  It’s a disguise that shows who OTHERS really are, and allows this prince to grow into being a talented and genuine king.

In The Brothers’ Grimm’s story, “The Donkey,” the second king burns the donkey hide completely.  We wonder about the necessity of the suit.  Perhaps it’s about vulnerability – he only goes without his donkeyness after acceptance in the second castle and by the princess on their wedding night.

In The Brothers’ Grimm’s story, “The Donkey,” the titular character: Waiting, nothing happening, waiting patiently with a display of his very high talent.  He is accepted but not advancing, so in a reversal of his earlier maternal rejection, he makes to leave this adopted kingdom.
