The now gold-chained and red shoe shod little boy bird makes his way next to the miller’s.  He negotiates with them for their milling stone and returns home.  His family is having dinner, but his stepmother complains she feels unwell and has a sense of doom, in contrast to how the others feel.  Meanwhile in the courtyard, the bird sings his song and the father comes out and Marlinchen weeps.  The bird drops his possessions and at last, the stepmother comes out, and she receives the miller’s stone…
Problem solved, the bird re-boys and the family returns to their dinner.

The little boy bird carries the gold chain in his right foot and flies to the shoemaker’s and repeats his song, adding “What a beautiful bird am I!”  The cobbler runs out coatless, calling out his family, and the bird negotiates for little red shoes.

(Graphic content warning) When Father is finished with seemingly unwittingly eating her brother, she takes his bones and buries them in courtyard under the juniper tree.  A great fire appears in the mist and a beautiful bird emerges, singing the tale of the murderous horrors that have befallen the boy.  The goldsmith hears and asks the bird to sing again, and the tweeter negotiates for a gold chain.

After her stepson’s decapitation, the mother makes black pudding with his body, seasoned with his sister’s tears.  Father comes home, and his wife tells him his son has left unexpectedly for an extended vacation.  He is dissatisfied, but he devours the pudding, not letting anyone else partake, commenting enigmatically, “It is all mine!” as he disposes of the bones beneath the table.

Possessed, the stepmother starts to give an apple to Marlinchen, but then saves it for her brother.  She decapitates him, and puts his head back on, then tricks her daughter into knocking it off.

2000 years ago, the wife of an infertile couple goes to the juniper tree in their courtyard and peels an apple.  Blood falls on the snow and she wishes to have a child like the snow and blood.  Later, she gives birth to a son and passes away and is buried under the tree.  Years pass, and the man has a new wife and daughter.  The boy’s home life is torment because of his stepmother.

I recall Jonathan Haidt’s phone-free, free range children.  We link this idea of strength from adversity even to wine.  David Sinclair has talked about this hormesis. Even trees raised in a biosphere without winds to push them as they develop fall down.

We talk about helicopter parenting and its unfortunate development, bulldozer parenting.  We relate these to Rousseau’s tyrant child in Emile.  Totally avoidable suffering.  (But you could say that about most things unwise – and that’s one reason we seek wisdom.)

Rousseau talks about strength being important to happiness.  In Emile he writes how people can have compassion while being happy in their own good circumstances.  The vain, dependent boy we linked to helicopter and now bulldozer parenting.

The unsatisfied vain boy, wanting to be better than others because he’s been fed on praise.  Praising kids, are we feeding their vanity or upping their self-esteem? Going out into the world as a participating member of society, or a wannabe tyrant?

Becoming Human

I view having deep, open conversations as perhaps the primary way I explore my and others' humanity.  I am looking for self-transcendence, knowledge, depth and love though exploration of experience, stories (such as myths and folktales), and ideas.  I hope you enjoy these conversations for personal growth and happiness, and thank you for listening.
