We see some parallels between this story and the Lachesis of ancient Greece.  More deeply, we see the traditional work of her sex and wounding in a dense dynamic of maturity, sex and death.  The world of woes comes to the princess despite her parents’ trying to shut them out.

In a way, there is no justice in this story – the prince seems to come along after a hundred years and so wins the princess, and the vengeful Wise Woman is never punished.  The palace represents a place where all needs are met, and the princess is brought up by “bulldozer” parents, to use modern language.  When the princess goes up to the tower, the details seem to show it was all meant to happen.  It’s almost as if that room at the top has been waiting there her whole life.

Grimm Bros.' The Sleeping Beauty (Briar Rose)

The king and queen have difficulty conceiving, but while the queen is bathing a frog comes up from the pond and informs her she’ll have a baby within the year.  For the birth, the king invites twelve of the thirteen of the wise women.  Enraged, the thirteenth interrupts the blessings of her companions to prophesize that Briar Rose will prick her finger on a spindle and die on her fifteenth birthday.  The twelfth softens the curse’s sentence to a century of sleep of the whole kingdom.

The king and queen attempt to protect their daughter from all ills in the years that follow.  On her fifteenth birthday, her parents gone, Briar Rose explores the castle.  Climbing a tower, she finds a door with a rusty key in the lock.  Within is an old woman at a spindle.  Intrigued, Rose asks to use the unfamiliar device and is immediately pricked and everything falls into a deep slumber.  Even the trees and the wind fall silent.

The king and queen return home and join the others in slumber.  After a century, various princes have failed to make their way through the thornbush walls, but now a prince comes and finds they’ve been replaced by roses.  He makes his way into the castle and kisses Briar Rose, and she and everyone and everything else wake up and continue as if there has been no pause.  The prince and Rose are married and live happily ever after.

After being waylaid by their daughter’s cursing, the king and queen attempt to protect their daughter from all ills in the years that follow.  On her fifteenth birthday, her parents gone, Briar Rose explores the rooms of the castle.  Climbing a tower, she finds a door with a rusty key in the lock.  Within is an old woman at a spindle working with flax.  Intrigued, Rose asks to use the unfamiliar device and is immediately pricked and falls onto a bed and everything falls into a deep slumber.  The servants preparing the feast, the flies, even the trees and the wind fall silent.

I paraphrase something from Pascal about the specialness of consciousness versus even the power of a giant supernova that could wipe us out in a second.  We know what is happening… This is how our chat on existential angst concludes.

In the past, people had a more mythological point of view, but now our physical universe can truly be seen as unconnected to our deeper selves.  Things are more strange and vast than we can even imagine.  In come philosophy to help bridge the gap and know how to deal in mystery.

LL talks about what may help feeling insignificant is “doing [real] things” with relationships and a meaningful role in life.  I try to explore how one can feel connected in other ways as well.

LL thinks of how we are experiencing the things people in many past eras did, and others after us will experience these same things after we are gone.  She sometimes feels daunted by this.  People in a religious mode, in contrast, say they feel small but good because of this.  One needn’t concern oneself with everything.  I explore her feelings on the matter.

Becoming Human

I view having deep, open conversations as perhaps the primary way I explore my and others' humanity.  I am looking for self-transcendence, knowledge, depth and love though exploration of experience, stories (such as myths and folktales), and ideas.  I hope you enjoy these conversations for personal growth and happiness, and thank you for listening.
