We discuss how wrong word usage ungrounds the conversation and our psychology from real things, how one can feel this.  It hurts the art of the conversation and clouds it.  People can also use language to add or subtract gravitas from the subject. Homeless/the Unhoused. Politically-Correct Language: softening language maybe, controlling thought maybe, or certainly influencing it, leading from language to action.

LL wonders if diluted word usage can make us weaker.  Concrete use of language and its relation to thought.  We spin webs and make imaginary worlds with words; this and class.

Words like "hero" seem to have been diluted in meaning to the point where no bravery is involved in some usage.  We complain about language pollution with another example.

I summarize a little of Rousseau’s big book on education and mention its place in Western philosophical discourse.  I read a bit from the book that makes clear Rousseau’s counter Enlightenment position. We discuss taste in language, bombastic usage, “heroes,” and such.

Stories are powerful but Stoics and Buddhists, among others, point to the power of breaking their spell. But perhaps a circular view of stories has another strength altogether.

Dionysus, Death and Immortality.  Dionysus, Persephone, and the Theater.  In performances, Dionysus is communally embodied and so is literally the most human of the ancient Greek gods.  And vino, which wends its way through our soul and which helps us speak through its consumption, adds to the analogy.

My friend LL and I discuss taste in language.  We start off with the question of why it’s hard to even discuss this, possibly because of the weight of the belief that taste is subjective.  I read a bit of Rousseau’s Emile, Part IV where he is talking about the laconic taste of the ancients vs. that of supposedly bombastic moderns.  We discuss our thoughts about clarity vs. nebulousness with language, and go into “Politically Correct” language as well.
