Modern Disillusionment and the Meaning Crisis (Clip)
I like how John Vervaeke tries to describe how we got into the meaning crisis, going from the Aristotelian scientific to the modern worldview.  I mention other disillusioning experiences and feeling cast out.

In “Awakening from the Meaning Crisis” Vervaeke unpacks terms we use, including mindfulness, translated from “sati,” which is a kind of remembering.  This is a bruited-about word, but Vervaeke points out we have a lot of vagueness and confusion around it.  He tries to provide a definition, which is not a feature list, as we often do when we try to define mindfulness.  Vervaeke tries to provide a structural-functional account, like Plato’s eidos.

After watching “Hillbilly Elegy,” the movie based on JD Vance’s memoir, as well as a podcast with the very accomplished Johnny Kim, I reflected on my life and how much time I’ve squandered.  LL and I talk about our motivation and (lack of) accomplishments.  LL previously focused on school and is stagnating because she did not realize her true interests earlier.

We start off with a chat where we talk about the movie based on J.D. Vance’s memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, and go on to talk about Vervaeke’s project in Awakening from the Meaning Crisis.  He wants to recover the various parts of the tradition that have informed our ways of thinking without our knowing it, sources such as the Bible and Aristotle, as well as possible solutions that seem to be popular, like mindfulness, Stoicism, and psychedelics.  I talk about some of these as well as my wisdom and awakening ways, like folklore and philosophical dialogue.

(From a discussion off the Brothers Grimm’s “Eve’s Various Children”)  We conclude our conversation with a reflection on PC and abstract language, inflating job titles and undervaluing work with the hands.

I wonder about the value of different jobs, and think of complex and abstract job titles we have now.  LL says we may inflate jobs to somehow make people feel elevated.  In schools too, we try to raise everyone.  I feel this is part of the increase of BS in life.  Everything becomes enshrouded in this obscuring fog.

(From the Brothers Grimm’s “Eve’s Various Children”) It is important to value working jobs, which you could argue are more important than white collar jobs.  Rousseau says the esteem people have of a particular job is the inverse of its value.

(From the Brothers Grimm’s “Eve’s Various Children”)  I think of the official stories are like a guarded orchard, but people telling stories, that proliferation, is like a forest growing up around it.  Not that I don’t value shared and upheld myths, but I want there also to be the rich cultural growth around them.  LL opines that the latter might fill in holes for the people.

(From the Brothers Grimm’s “Eve’s Various Children”) I talk about my bias from education that influenced my interpretation of this story, one that is negative about the past.  We chose this story because it seems to be from folk tradition that is influenced by the Biblical canon but is not a part of it.

Becoming Human

I view having deep, open conversations as perhaps the primary way I explore my and others' humanity.  I am looking for self-transcendence, knowledge, depth and love though exploration of experience, stories (such as myths and folktales), and ideas.  I hope you enjoy these conversations for personal growth and happiness, and thank you for listening.
