My friend LL has recounted being satisfied while serving people, especially the elderly, in church, and I connect this to Rousseau’s Emile and his idea that natural sentiments lead us towards the good.  I explore how this might be related to the senses. How much satisfaction would you feel helping others you never interact with?

From my reading of Rousseau’s Emile, I talk about the simplistic ideas influenced by Rousseau. Then I go into Rousseau’s evidence of nature’s, including human nature’s, essential goodness.

Was there ever a time when you felt satisfied and glad to have lived? Rousseau says that you would have felt that way when you did good, and my friend LL and I talk about our experiences with this as well as the philosopher’s idea of a scientific man’s God, suffering and self-knowledge, and practices, such as mindfulness meditation, to reduce suffering and build wisdom.  What has caused you suffering?  How are you your best friend and your worst enemy?

How often do we use words like “community” and “tradition,” although we are always “reinventing” and “rediscovering,” etc. these things?

In their needs, work, and entertainment now, people don’t need and aren’t interacting with other people.  What might be a solution to that?
