The modern philosopher Rousseau envisions a whole person, in touch with his sentiments, independent and yet humane towards his fellows, very different from Plato's citizen.

Are knowledge of good and bad inherent? In this clip we talk about our experiences and some of Rousseau’s writing, where he says conscience is to the soul what instinct is to the body.  An opposing view of conscience is that it builds over time.  A good topic for discussion.

I read some from Emile about universal inherent goodness.  Rousseau believes we all are satisfied with goodness in life, if we’re only not corrupted by others and taught well.  He, in characteristic rhetoric, writes of the “temptation to do good.” This obviously contradicts much traditional teaching but is intriguing to ponder and discuss.

I read a passage from Rousseau’s Emile arguing that human beings are naturally satisfied with themselves when they do good (and that the lack of such memories would make a person wicked). We consider Patric Gagne’s experience (Sociopath) as a possible reposte to Rousseau’s hypothesis. We reflect on Benjamin Franklin’s observation that colonial captives of the American Indians returned did not want to stay, but that the same was not true going the other direction. Whether natural or social, from goodness we go on to talk about loneliness and community and how to possibly facilitate the latter, bringing Jared Diamond’s The World Until Yesterday a bit into the conversation.

In self-analysis, I admit that vanity has played a large role in my life.  I was even proud of it in a way, perhaps deluding myself into thinking it was a sign of merit, fervently charmed by the image in the mirror.  I now regret this and wish I’d worked harder at building my virtue.  LL talks of her insecurity and we dialogue about it.

We read from the beginning of Homer’s Odyssey, trans. Robert Fagles, and discuss it.  He is an ideal man or human, a leader who loses his men through their lack of virtue. The King of Ithaca is given recompense and finally makes it home to right the wrongs that proliferated in his absence.  Characterization of his Mentor’s favorite.

My friend LL and I read the beginning of Homer’s Odyssey, about the man Odysseus, and discuss how he might be prototypical and what we can learn from his story. He is portrayed as experienced, wily, learning, and especially suffering and pining for his home. One decision of pride also causes him much suffering (almost destruction for him and for, ultimately, the rest of his men) out on the barren sea, tossed from one very different alien place to another.
