From Richard Davidson’s The Emotional Life of your Brain, we get the idea to try this therapy to increase what he calls the Outlook dimension of the brain, which is basically how positive or negative a mood you generally have.  We introduce the therapy here: (1) 3x a day, write one positive trait about someone and yourself (2) Express gratitude regularly  (3) Compliment others regularly.  Keep a record of when you felt a genuine connection.

I reflect a bit on the lack of free will and meditation practices.  Letting go of concepts and paying attention to the present.

We might think of self-development as adding, but one can think of it in an opposite way – of losing what holds you back.  I think this is actually superior for well-being and being good to others (although skill- and other development is crucial too).  Meditation as a way of subtracting what you don’t want, like reactivity and rumination, and not about control.

We read a passage from Richard Davidson’s The Emotional Life of your Brain about Well-Being Therapy, which he cites as a way to increase your Outlook emotional dimension, which is how positively you generally feel and think about your future.  For a week we agree to: write 3x/day one positive characteristic of yourself and a person in your life; genuinely compliment people; genuinely thank people.  We will get back next week with the results.  We also discussed the Four Agreements again by Ruiz, especially Always do your Best.  It was a practical podcast about doing better, feeling better and helping others feel better and connected.

From Rousseau’s Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar, in Emile, we talk of the connection to the divine as a personal helper.  Alternatively, one might imagine the divine as nature, a system of laws, a beautiful order.  And how do you worship such a god? We link this to landscape painting.

I relate some of this part of Rousseau’s Emile.  Rousseau presents a character who loves the natural world and deep and scientific knowledge of it, and who lives in a religiously dogmatic world, and who also wants to do genuine good for his parishioners.  He seems to try and thread the needle between: that dominant dogmatism and intolerance as well as burgeoning scientistic and atheistic worldviews.

John Vervaeke talks about different ways of knowing that, besides the dominant propositional way of knowing things, contribute deeply to meaning.  Deemphasizing beliefs in the search for meaning.  Less in our heads constructing concepts and arguing over those.

Becoming Human

I view having deep, open conversations as perhaps the primary way I explore my and others' humanity.  I am looking for self-transcendence, knowledge, depth and love though exploration of experience, stories (such as myths and folktales), and ideas.  I hope you enjoy these conversations for personal growth and happiness, and thank you for listening.
